I have been watching Tesla earnings calls for years. And I want to tell you something honestly. Tonight was different. Most earnings calls are predictable. Numbers come out. Stock moves. Done. Tonight felt like watching a chess match where the pieces kept changing shape mid game. Let me walk you through everything that happened. And more importantly what it actually means.

The stock jumped 4% the moment the results hit the wire. Bulls were celebrating. And then Elon started talking.

The Call Changed Everything

Think of it this way. Imagine you open a birthday present and it is exactly what you wanted. You are thrilled. Then someone tells you two more things. First — the gift costs three times more to maintain than you thought. Second — one of the main features you were promised when you bought it years ago will never actually work on your model. That is what happened tonight.

Bomb One

Capex Jumps to $25 Billion

At the start of this year Tesla guided for $20 billion in capital expenditure. Tonight CFO Vaibhav Taneja quietly delivered one of the most significant announcements of the call. That number is now above $25 billion. A $5 billion increase in a single quarter. Six new factories ramping simultaneously. AI infrastructure for Robotaxi. Optimus production lines. Cybercab manufacturing. Terafab semiconductor fab in Austin. Tesla Semi production in Nevada.

"We are in a very big capital investment phase, which is going to start now and would last a couple of years." — Tesla CFO

And the punchline that sent the stock giving back all its gains: negative free cash flow for the rest of 2026. The entire year. Every quarter from here until December. Tesla generated $1.44 billion in free cash flow this quarter. Management just told you the next three quarters will burn through more cash than they generate.

Bomb Two

Hardware 3 Will Never Do Unsupervised FSD

Millions of Tesla owners paid for Full Self Driving software. Some paid up to $15,000. They were promised a future where their car would drive itself. Tonight Elon Musk said clearly and directly: Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to support fully unsupervised autonomous driving. It has one eighth the memory bandwidth of Hardware 4. It cannot be done. Full stop.

Tesla will offer discounted trade-ins and hardware upgrades. But the message is brutally simple. If you bought Full Self Driving and your car has Hardware 3 you are not getting the product you paid for without spending more money. The damage to customer trust is real.

But Here Is What The Bears Keep Missing

Robotaxi is actually operating. Not a promise. Not a slide deck. Not a future timeline. Actually operating.

Robotaxi Status — April 2026

Austin. Dallas. Houston. No safety monitor in the front seat. No human behind the wheel. Real passengers. Real rides. Real streets. Tesla's unsupervised Robotaxi service is the first multi-city commercial deployment without a safety monitor by any major US operator. $4.20 flat fare. 31 vehicles in Austin alone.

Waymo operates in those same cities. But Waymo uses LiDAR hardware that costs over $100,000 per vehicle. Tesla uses cameras and software running on their own AI stack. If that system proves reliable at scale the cost advantage is almost impossible to overstate. Every Tesla vehicle ever built could theoretically become a revenue generating Robotaxi node.

Optimus. July or August.

Elon said the next Optimus reveal happens around late July or August. The delay is not because the robot is not ready. It is because competitors do a frame by frame analysis of every video Tesla releases and copy whatever they can. So Tesla wants to wait until the version is close to actual production before showing it publicly. Elon said Optimus will be Tesla's biggest product ever. Not just Tesla's biggest. Possibly the biggest product any company has ever launched.

Cybercab Has Started Production

Cybercab production has begun at Giga Texas. The dedicated two seat autonomous vehicle. No steering wheel. No pedals. Designed purely for Robotaxi use. Priced around $30,000. Initial production will be very slow — then ramping exponentially toward year end. Tesla Semi production starting soon in Nevada as well.

The AI5 Chip Nobody Is Talking About

Tesla completed the AI5 chip tape-out ahead of schedule. The team worked every weekend for six months including every holiday. AI5 will go into Optimus and Tesla's supercomputer. This is the chip that underpins the entire autonomy and robotics vision. Getting it done early is genuinely positive news. Elon mentioned Intel as a potential manufacturing partner — Intel popped in after hours trading on that single comment.

This Is Exactly Why The CLEAR Framework Exists

Tesla is a perfect case study in why we need a scoring system before we invest in anything. The story is compelling. The technology is real. The ambition is extraordinary. But the fundamentals tell a different story right now. Consistent profitability. Legitimate competitive advantages. Earnings momentum. Accessible valuation. Relative strength against peers. These five dimensions cut through the noise of any earnings call — including one as dramatic as tonight's.

My Honest Personal View

Tesla is not my type of stock for long term compounding. I need consistent profitability. Durable competitive advantages. Reasonable valuations. Negative free cash flow for the rest of the year with $25 billion in capital expenditure on businesses that generate essentially zero revenue today — at a valuation of $1.5 trillion — is not my framework.

But I want to be fair about something. Elon Musk has been wrong about timelines for a decade. And he has also built one of the most valuable companies in history from nothing. Both things are true simultaneously. Never write off Elon Musk. The question tonight is not whether the vision is real. The question is whether the timeline is real.

What Happens To The Stock Now

The $25 billion capex and negative free cash flow announcement will weigh on near-term sentiment. The Hardware 3 revelation will generate real anger from customers who paid for FSD. But the gross margin improvement and genuine Robotaxi progress give bulls something to hold onto. Tesla at $400 is priced for a middle case. Bear case implies $240 to $280. Bull case — Robotaxi scales, Cybercab ramps, FSD subscribers grow rapidly — implies $600 or higher. Tonight did not resolve which world we are in. But it gave us more data points than any previous call.
